Sri Lankan Students in the U.S. Increase by 10%: Strengthening Educational Ties Between Nations

The U.S. Embassy in Colombo has announced a significant milestone in educational collaboration between Sri Lanka and the United States. The 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange reveals a 10% increase in Sri Lankan students pursuing higher education in the United States during the 2023-2024 academic year. This growth highlights the enduring appeal of U.S. colleges and universities as destinations for world-class education and cultural exchange.

Released annually, the Open Doors Report is a comprehensive study of international student mobility trends. Now in its 75th year, the latest edition showcases the United States as the leading choice for higher education globally, welcoming a record 1.12 million international students from over 210 countries and territories.

A Growing Partnership

U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, applauded the rise in Sri Lankan students studying abroad:

“The 10% increase demonstrates the power of international education in forging strong connections between our people. U.S. universities provide Sri Lankan students access to cutting-edge research, world-class education, and vibrant campus experiences, preparing them for success in a globalized world. This growth reflects our shared commitment to education and innovation.”

Sri Lankan students are drawn to the United States for its renowned programs in STEM fields, advanced research facilities, and opportunities like Optional Practical Training (OPT). Many pursue graduate-level studies, joining a global network of professionals connected to both countries.

Key Global Trends from Open Doors 2024

  • Increase in International Students: U.S. colleges are experiencing an overall 7% increase in international student enrollment, with 90% returning to in-person education.
  • Focus on STEM: STEM fields remain a significant draw for international students, with nearly 50% of students enrolled in STEM programs such as Computer Science, Engineering, and Physical Sciences.
  • Growth in Practical Training: Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs saw double-digit growth, emphasizing hands-on learning for global career readiness.
  • Community College Accessibility: A 13% increase in international student enrollment at U.S. community colleges highlights affordable pathways to higher education.
