UNP Leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe launched a scathing critique of the NPP-led government, warning that an “L” Board Parliament, if elected, would lead the country into a major crisis. Speaking at the final election rally in Maradana on 11 November in support of the New Democratic Front (NDF) candidates contesting under the “Gas Cylinder” symbol, Wickremesinghe accused President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and his government of lacking the necessary skills to govern.
Wickremesinghe pointed out, “It has already been proven that none of the rulers in the Malimawa Government, including the President, have the ability to govern the country.” He urged the public to elect experienced candidates, highlighting his own administration’s successful negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the management of national loans.
He raised concerns about the country’s economic future, stating, “We must start repaying our debts by 2028, and have time to pay them off by 2042. If the loans are not settled, we will return to the ‘queue era’.” He also criticised the government for its lack of a clear economic vision, mentioning the rising cost of basic goods like rice and coconut, and the ongoing price hikes of essential items such as eggs.
Wickremesinghe questioned the government’s handling of the IMF negotiations and criticised the NPP’s promise of a “rich country and a beautiful life,” saying, “Have they implemented it now?” He concluded by describing the current government as inexperienced, with its leaders lacking the administrative and governance skills required to lead the country effectively.
