Ashoka Ranwala was elected as the Speaker of the 10th Parliament.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya proposed his name and Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed his nomination.

The new Speaker expressed his gratitude for his appointment as Speaker.

Mr. Ranwala, an executive National People’s Power member, contested from the Gampaha District in this year’s general election and secured 109,332 preferential votes, placing sixth on the Gampaha N.P.A.

Ashoka Ranwala, a former western provincial councilor, was also the director of the Biogeneration Arthashastra Research Institute.

Mr. Ranwala, who also served as president of the Petroleum Public Employees Union, was active in politics with the National People’s Party.
